JANUARY: SKALD, Mel Xkejfa Duo and Dean Barton
Who’s Who?
SKALd
Once you hear Skald you will be hooked. This recently formed quintet breathes life into Maltese culture and whisks you away into their world from the outset. The name Skald means ‘splinter’ in Maltese and each musician in this band becomes a fragment of the other that certainly penetrates deep into the listeners’ soul. It’s also a Scandi word used for a composer who recites poems and hymns while honouring heroes and their accomplishments which is also fairly appropriate. The band consists of; Bertu Aquilina, who shares his passion for ethnic music, classically trained Gabriel Gacui on violin, Rock and Blues aficionado Simon Bezzina on bass, traditional Maltese folk muso Jesmar Bezzina and vocalist and acoustic guitarist Aaron Debattista. The result is a seamless blend of calming, musicality that is simply divine.

Mel Xkejfa Duo
Canadian born Mel Xkejfa is a singer, songwriter, who formerly fronted and co-wrote with Chasing Pandora. Since embarking on her solo career she combines both music and poetry through her creative output. We actually wrote about her back in May. After a hiatus, these last months have seen her working on new tunes and a brand new live set with well known session guitarist Danny Magro, and Backdoor Jam viewers get a ringside seat for the return. Together they perform a body of work full of deep lyrical content and musical guitar accompaniment, plus music from Chasing Pandora’s well-crafted discography.

Dean Barton
Born in Wakefield England, Dean grew up surrounded by music with his father fronting the band Smokie from 1987-1995. For the last ten years, he has toured Europe with his band Spirit of Smokie supporting the likes of Chris Rea, Status Quo, and Chris Norman. More recently the band has had a rebrand and now, under the name ‘Barton’ they have released a new album ‘Changes’ which promises to be a cocktail of Rod Stewart, The Faces, and Americana Rock wrapped up with a fresh edge. A favourite face on Gozo with his band Lost on the Rock with Eugene Bajjada and James Davies, Dean debut’s the Backdoor Jam stage this month solo, with three tracks from his forthcoming album.
