Casa Vostra At Home
When Casa Vostra opened its doors in victoria a few months ago, little did they believe that they would soon be living up to their namesake and delivering food to your home.
Pre-COVID, there were countless times I wished for a good restaurant to offer a takeaway service. Admittedly, it was mostly after a night of wine, but, I suppose we should perhaps be careful what we wish for.
When it comes down to where to get the best pizza in Gozo, people have really strong opinions. Support for local pizza style can be ingrained, like unconditional loyalty to Juventus or Inter. I live with an italian, I know what it feels like to be on the other side of THAT conversation. There is no pizza quite like the one you grew up with or even had last week. Dissected down to what cheese was used, how long it has been in the oven, what kind of oven it was cooked in, what heat what oil…I could go on.
Casa Nostra arrived at the door, masked and happy with a bag of goodies we couldn’t wait to get stuck into.
Personally, I’ve eaten many a pizza, and reviewed a fair few too, but I do not consider myself an expert on the hows and whys of pizza making. However, I do know that the softness of a true Neapolitan pizza crust partly comes from it being cooked in a really hot wood-fired oven. Air bubbles in the dough pop out by the skilled pizzaiolo (a person who makes pizza in a pizzeria) to form the cornicione (the crust) of the pizza base. That then swells, chars and blisters before the interior dries and crisps.
Casa Vostra does not disappoint. The smell from the bag was insane and the pizza completely lived up to its Neapolitan roots. We had the Salsiccia e Friarielli comprising; mozzarella, salsiccia fresca, (a deeply satisfying fried sausage) e friarielli (wild Neapolitan broccoli) a Naples staple and it was divine.
We also sampled the Tradizionale. A beef burger of the house (no pun intended), with bacon, tomatoes, lettuce caramelised onions and cheddar all packed neatly in a pizza dough bun. Yum!
Oh….and we had chips on the side. Good chips. Really really really good chips!
Casa Nostra scored a hat trick.
Although restaurants still cling to their beloved Trip Advisor reviews, and they may still hold some weight for the odd passing traveller, I think it’s becoming clearer that those once required, one-time opinions of, let’s face it, mostly people that love to moan, do not give a true account of a place and should certainly not sway or influence a local on their decision to try something again in their home town. Reputation should come from consistent, real experiences.
Pizza loyalty is laudable but it is also limiting. That particular pizza you completely love is not necessarily your best and it doesn’t have to be your last. Plus, our mood affects the way we experience food so no virtue points are awarded for pizza monogamy. In Italy, exceptional pizza comes in several styles, and all come with different experiences, so I am all for a bit of pizza polyamory.
I choose neutrality. I’m not fence-sitting, nor shying away from opinion. I have plenty of those! Like a motto I would tend to use in my own life, I am blessed and happy I have plenty of super pizza choices on Gozo. But both myself and my opinionated, pizza-loving Italian husband agreed, Casa Vostra has most definitely won a place in our hearts.
