It may not be the Easter we all had in mind but there are some things that are non-negotiable.
Being treated to fresh, oven-hot Qassatat ta’ l-Ghid (Easter pies), lovingly made by the wonderful Anna from Tal-Furnar Restaurant & Bakery in Xaghra is a real indulgence. Anna and her husband, John run this authentic bakery which has been in operation for over 100 years, the bakery itself is a Gozitan landmark!
These Easter delights are made with a mixture of mature and fresh sheep cheeselets and each family has their own recipe twist. Anna kindly delivered a selection of Qassatat ta’ l-Ghid which she baked that morning – they arrived warm with that irresistible bakery smell! The pie texture was light yet oozing with flavour and we particularly enjoyed the sultana version for that sweet and savoury hit. What a treat!
Tal-Furnar is a real family affair and their passion for authenticity shines. Anna and John follow a farm to table concept using local home-grown ingredients to create traditional Gozitan dishes and even make their own wine from their vineyard.
“Anna and John cook with love (and a wood burning stone oven used by four generations) which gives their dishes that amazing traditional flavour.”
