Would you like to avoid using 10 million bottles of plastic waste by 2023?
To achieve this 7000 households in Malta and Gozo will be drinking pure filtered water from their kitchen taps. How you may ask?
Introducing TAPP Water Malta. A brand new eco start-up who are part of the global TAPP Water movement on a mission to avoid 10 billion bottles of plastic waste by 2023. Every household in Malta and Gozo that uses a TAPP Water Filter avoids at least 365 bottles of plastic waste per year, emits 91 KG less CO2 and saves €182. Sustainable, households using TAPP averts the use up to 1000 bottles a year. What’s not to like?
WHY BUY THIS PRODUCT?
Phil, TAPPs representative for Gozo, contacted GITH Magazine to tell us about what he was up to, we jumped at the chance to find out more. He turned up and fitted our TAPP in less than 5 minutes but could clearly spend a lifetime explaining why this product is the bees knees.
He explained that it has advanced filter technology removing unpleasant tastes and smells from our normal tap water plus it eliminates over 80 contaminants, including microplastics, chlorine, lead and other heavy metals, and pesticides with its carbon filter.
You can even measure your savings and your positive impact on the planet by using the MyTAPP app (available on Google & The App Store) to track the money you save by not buying plastic water bottles and monitor your positive carbon footprint.
“We’ve been using this product for over a month and it’s a relief to have found an eco alternative to bottled water that still provides pure tasting water without great expense and ongoing maintenance. “GITH HQ
GITH Magazines review
The TAPP 2 Twist unit was straightforward to fit, for most taps you can fit the unit yourself, however if you are hesitant or have a more complex looking tap, then a representative is easily contactable and will promptly fit your unit in person. We love the personalised instalment service which TAPP Water offer to residents on Malta and Gozo. Unlike some other purification systems there is no complicated or expensive maintenance, just a simple filter replacement every three months.
The unit looks great, it’s compact and leaves ample space to still use the sink regularly for washing dishes, filling the kettle and the dog bowl! We were especially pleased with how good the water pressure remained and with a neat stream. Next comes the all-important taste test! The taste is clean and pure. Although the filter removes the impurities it retains the all-important minerals which are often lost with filtration systems.
One noticeable difference is much lighter supermarket loads and not having to religiously count how many bottles are left in the cupboard! The financial saving is a major plus, as the running cost of the TAPP 2 Twist is only €5 a month, however, the environmental impact saving is worth so much more. It’s a relief to have found a wonderful eco alternative to bottled water and no longer contribute to plastic bottle pollution; instead support a solution on Gozo.
GITH Magazine believes this is an essential piece of kit for every household in Gozo and Malta. So much so that we are championing this eco-product with an exclusive offer code which means you save €10 on each product you buy for a limited time only.
four more reasons to buy a TAPP 2 twist filter
1. the Taste
Malta’s use of tap water for drinking is among the lowest in EU, surveys conducted by the WSC shows that the preferred source of drinking water is by far, bottled water, because most of us do not like the taste of tap water even if it meets all the EU safety standards. The WSC data shows that it’s a question of trust, simply put, in Malta people just won’t trust tap water even if it costs only €0.02c a litre. Is it time to change our minds?
2. cut out the Plastic Bottles and save the planet
Over 200 million plastic bottles are used every year in Malta. That’s a ridiculous amount of single-use plastic filling the earth, in fact approximately 500 plastic bottles for each and every household. Very little is recycled in Malta (only 14%), whilst some of it exported after processing, plenty of plastic never makes it to recycling and ends up in landfill or discarded because only 25% is ever collected. We all know this. We see plastic bottles everywhere. On the beach, in the water, in the countryside, on pavements. It has to stop.
3. reduce microplastics
When plastic gets into our environment it often ends up in our water system as microplastics; which we can then end up drinking. Check out our article on micro plastics here.
Finally consumers have to buy, carry home bottles from the store and then store and throw away the bottles. For this they pay almost 1000 times more than tap water. As if this wasn’t enough the plastic leeches into the water which means that our bodies get contaminated with BPA and phathalates of which we don’t yet understand the long term impact.

HOW IT WORKS
TAPP 2 filters the water through 5 stages of filtration including the highest quality activated carbon block with 1-2 micron filtration. The water flows through the filter with tap water pressure and out comes clean, great tasting water. The carbon block is made of organic coconut shell. The filters are highly efficient in removing and filtering the following;
- Taste and odour.
- Chlorine and its’ by-products.
- Heavy metals including lead.
- Nitrates, pharmaceuticals
- Stage 1. Polypropylene screen wrapper (New)
This wraps around the carbon block and filters out larger microorganisms, sediment, silt, rust, scale particles and other impurities. It also protects the carbon block from being contaminated by human hands when it’s changed.
Stage 2: Activated Carbon Adsorption
The organic activated carbon removes chemical organic material, chlorine, chlorine byproducts (VOCs, THMs, HAAS, etc) taste, odor, pesticides, herbicides, PFAS and 50+ other contaminants. It also reduces heavy metals including lead, copper, mercury and more.
- Stage 3: Carbon Block Microfiltration
The carbon block is highly compressed to prevent particles larger than 1-2 micrometers from passing through. This prevents for example all microplastics, suspended particles and most bacteria from passing through the filter. It also prevents most particles from pipe corrosion and biofilm (bacteria build inside the pipes) from passing through.
- Stage 4: Limescale & heavy metal inhibition (New)
This is a proprietary formula (referred to as PSS) used inside the carbon block that breaks down the mineral to prevent limescale from forming and further reduce heavy metals. Previously we did about 50% and now this is increased to 80% reduction.
- Stage 5: Strainer Mesh
Filters out hair, sand, dirt and other impurities from the pipes for the filtered water.
